The Health Work Group monitors and advises the strategic health authority and health trusts on all matters relating to Child Protection and Safeguarding children. In addition, the Work Group supports the dissemination of safeguarding information to all health professionals.
The Work Group’s agenda is informed both by the Board’s Business Plan and by new guidance or protocols that are issued – these are generally published by the Department of Health, the Department for Education and Skills or the London Safeguarding Children Board. The Work Group has close links with colleagues in the Teenage Pregnancy, Drug and Alcohol and Parental Mental Health services.
This Work Group enables professionals from all the Health Trusts to discuss issues in common, and to develop consistent and clear guidance on a range of safeguarding issues. Recently, the group considered how professionals might deal with concerns regarding children becoming infected with the HIV virus through breat-feeding. The Work Group has agreed how such issues will be resolved on a case-by-case basis. If you are a health professional and would like further information about the Health Work Group, please contact the Lead professional for safeguarding in your organisation.
The members of the Work Group include representatives from Greenwich Teaching Primary Care Trust, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Oxleas and Greenwich Child and Adolescent Mental Health service, London Ambulance and Children’s Services. The Chair of the Work Group is John Blankson, however whilst he is on sick leave, Paula Wren (Named Nurse for Child Protection) is covering this role.
